WHPA webinar: Tackling AMR in a Changing World

AMR webinar announcement

19 November 2024—Antimicrobial resistance is not only one of the top ten global health threats, but it is also exacerbated by climate change, making it a major challenge to global health security and a likely impediment to achieving the SDGs. Given this heightened global relevance, it was the subject of the High-Level Meeting (HLM) at the 2024 UN General Assembly in September.

At this webinar, WHPA expert speakers from dentistry, nursing and medicine reviewed the commitments made by world leaders at the recent HLM and considered the implications for low-, middle- and high-income countries, given high levels of global inequality. They discussed the key financial and operational challenges different governments and health systems face in implementing effective AMR strategies.

Speakers also considered how public health messaging needs to change to better promote antimicrobial stewardship among both professionals and the general public. Uniquely, these speakers from different health professions were able to share best practice examples of interprofessional collaboration on AMR to guide and inspire future action.

Over 500 participants from 87 countries attended the webinar, the majority of them in Africa and Asia. The discussion between the panelists was enriched by the many engaged questions and comments from the audience in the Q&A chat.

The webinar was a kick-off event for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2024 (18-24 November; #WAAW2024), and was followed by a WHPA social media campaign throughout the week.
