Statement made at the 77th World Health Assembly on 31 May 2024
Honourable Chair, Distinguished Delegates,
I am speaking for the International Pharmaceutical Federation, member of the World Health Professions Alliance, which represents 41 million dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and physiotherapists.
We recognize the potential benefits of the GHPI and recognize the need to better address the underlying drivers of critical health needs in fragile, conflict-affected and vulnerable settings. However, we strongly recommend that the resolution also calls for all Member States and stakeholders to respect the integrity of health care personnel carrying out their duties under their respective professional codes of ethics.
We unreservedly condemn the ongoing violence targeting healthcare and the misuse of protective emblems in all regions. We urge you to support the World Health Professions Alliance’s call to protect healthcare facilities and personnel in areas of conflict, in accordance with international law.
